TMJ Dysfunction (CMT Micro Module)

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex and frequently used joints in the body. Every time we eat, drink, speak or breathe, the TMJ is at work, making it particularly susceptible to repetitive strain, muscular imbalance and altered joint mechanics.

Stress can add another layer to the problem, with jaw clenching and teeth grinding often leading to clicking, locking, restricted movement and pain.

Fortunately, the TMJ often responds extremely well to corrective manual therapy. In this module, you’ll learn the relevant anatomy, accurate assessment techniques, effective treatment strategies and practical home-care techniques to help achieve lasting results.

Online Course Overview

In this presentation, we look at dysfunction of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). The TMJ is one of the most complex and frequently used joints in the body. It not only opens and closes the mouth, but also allows the jaw to move from side to side and to glide forwards and backwards. Every time we eat, drink, speak or even breathe, the TMJ is at work.

Because of this almost constant activity, even relatively small changes in muscle balance or joint mechanics can have a significant effect on how the TMJ functions. Over time, repetitive strain, muscular imbalance and poor movement patterns can lead to clicking, locking, restricted movement and pain. Stress can add another layer to the problem, with jaw clenching and teeth grinding placing even greater demands on the joint and its surrounding soft tissues.

Fortunately, the TMJ often responds extremely well to corrective manual therapy. By restoring normal muscle balance and joint mechanics, we can reduce unnecessary stress on the joint and allow it to function more efficiently, often producing significant improvements in both movement and comfort.

By the end of this module, you’ll have a clear understanding of the relevant anatomy, accurate assessment techniques and effective treatment strategies for common TMJ dysfunctions. You’ll also learn practical home-care techniques that help patients maintain the improvements they achieve between treatments and support lasting results.
